I am not getting a cochlear implant.

September 29, 2007

Hey all.

I said in my last post relating to the CI that I wanted one, but I have decided not to get one.

For one thing, I have survived for 16 years without hearing anything. Will I die just because I don’t get one? No.

The oppression of people with cochlear implants is intolerable, and I do not want to be subjected to that. When a person gets a cochlear implant, they only have artifical hearing and they are still deaf. CI’s are not magic wands to solve everything. For some families, they may want to get their deaf kid a cochlear implant. But it is not for me right now, plus that wouldn’t ever change the fact that my first language is ASL and that speaking doesn’t feel natural to me at all.

Maybe I will change my mind in the far future, but I doubt it. I just do not need hearing and I will survive.

Thank you,

Kyle Brooks

Status of CI

February 1, 2007

Hi all.

My cochlear implant status may be a bit surprising to you. Basically, there is paperwork to do. On one piece of that paperwork, the CAS has to fill out ALL OF my family history. So my social worker is asking a family worker for that information. Until then, the CI is held up at least for now.

Thanks for reading

I am getting a cochlear implant

January 3, 2007

Hi all.

Well, months after I made the decision, I am getting a cochlear implant.

Why? Because I want and need some form of hearing that hearing aids have not given me
When / Where? Good question. unfortunately, I don’t know. But I will tell you all when that information becomes available.
Did you consider the risks? Yes, I did. I am willing to endure them for some more hearing.
Do you think that cochlear implants cure hearing? Do they? No, they do not. I have received this information from multiple sources including this wikipedia article and all the sources and/or references from there. I warn you, though: The Nucelus Cochlear Implant book didn’t give me that kind of information – all it did was advertise on and on about the greatness of their cochlear implants.
